Purpose & Goals
Are there other examples of participative budgeting?
Indeed there are, since this democratic device was not invented in Zurich. In fact, it was first tested in Porto Alegre (Brazil) in 1972. A similar process, the so-called «Bürgerhaushalt» is a well-established political instrument in Germany. In recent years, most participatory budgeting processes now take place online: such as Reykjavik after the financial crisis in 2008, Barcelona or Helsinki. In Switzerland, the Municipality of Lausanne has implemented it's own version.
